Writer's Guide to Government Information

Resources to inject real life detail into your fiction

Introduction to Inspiration from the Physical World

The world of the 21st Century is one of ubiquitous webcams and terabytes of images from around the world. This chapter points you to resources which will allow you to compare the image in your mind’s eye to images from reality.

Because photo libraries and web cams primarily answer the question “What does _____ look like?” I will not make a list of answerable questions for each particular resource in this chapter.

A word about traffic cameras

Traffic cameras are a good way to get some feel for the landscape of an area. It’s also a good way to judge the level of crowding and pace of life. Are some times of day busier than others? Who travels the roads late at night? Or in the middle of the day? Do the cars look more upscale in some places than others? Many places in the US and Canada now let you judge for yourself, either with video or still photos.

Resources for this chapter.
